Hi All,

Here is my writing for First Central’s Congregationalist this week.

Namaste,

Spring Is the Time To Move and Stretch
How are your joints feeling? Each season seems to be able to bring different sensations and sometimes pain to our joints. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the muscles, tendons (which attach muscles to bones) and ligaments (which attach bones to bones) are a part of the liver organ system. The liver organ system along with the gall bladder organ system are the two systems that may often appear with issues in springtime. Spring is also a time to strengthen these systems. One daily practice that can be immensely helpful especially, in springtime, is to start gently moving and stretching the body — much like the earth’s plants, trees and flower are doing outside.

Join us for the Monthly Donation-Only Gentle Movement Class in the back of the Sanctuary this Sunday, April 17th, from 11:40 a.m.-12:25 p.m. Practice this idea of beginning to move and stretch the body after a long winter. We will also be reviewing posture in sitting, standing and walking and how posture can affect the joints, as well as the back, muscles, organs and general health and energy and even life span!

IMG_6130April 2016 Quotes — A Little Space Yoga & Tai Chi

So if you feel lost, disappointed, hesitant, or weak, return to yourself, to who you are, here and now.
And when you get there, you will discover yourself, like a lotus flower in full bloom, even in a muddy pond, beautiful and strong.”
From The Secret Life of Water by Japanese Author and Researcher,
Masaru Emoto (22 July 1943-17 October 2014)

Hi All,

Last week in classes, I brought up how my experience with Baxter Bell’s yoga workshop, some of which was on his main focus of Yoga for Healthy Aging, the weekend before brought up the idea and importance, again, of taking care of one’s self. You would think that is what we are always doing, but it is so easy to become distracted and begin to believe that other people’s needs are more important than our own. They are not!

For those of us who may periodically fall into the place of caring for other people more than ourselves or defining ourselves through this preoccupation, I will pose the question: Are they and you really better off when your needs are not tended to and cultivated? I truly believe that taking care of one’s self may actually be one of the most selfless acts, yes, self-less, we can do because we will be healthier and more present and available for those we love.  Whenever we feel unwell or tired or exhausted or resentful, guess who pays the price? All of us. And it actually becomes all about us eventually, if it is not already, in this scenario.

Do us all a favor, including yourself, water and nourish your own roots firs and make sure you have the support you need to take care of you. As Judith Lasater says about loving one’s self, “Love yourself first, not only, but first.”

One of the most powerful ways that I do this and some of my favorite movements is to just roll around on the floor over various yoga props or none at all. These movements remind me of all the subtle and monumental movements happening under the earth this time of year. I often find this type of practice immensely, and more, helpful for waking up the body and breath in ways and understanding what it truly going on within me and what I may be needing than a standard active and upright practice might reveal.

Practice rolling around in this way and gently unfolding and unfurling the tendrils and breath of the body this Sunday and most of all taking care of you! Please email me to sign up, and I will send you a confirmation email.

Upward and Outward — Get Things Moving in Spring
If you are having a difficult time getting yourself moving and motivated this spring, it is understandable. Look at what is happening in nature: The earth’s plants and animals are beginning to move more into the light and energy of springtime, but this is after hibernation and migration.
From winter’s energy of downward and inward, spring calls us upward and outward. Such a challenging shift can be assisted by beginning to: stretch and move more, gently is always better to start; eat lighter foods (especially spring greens); try squeezing half a lemon in a cup of warm water in the morning instead of coffee; walk outside or do some outdoor activity, breathe fresh air, and witness the gifts of the new season; of course, rest when tired; exercise and take care of your eyes; clean out your house and any other areas of your life that are no longer serving you; start something new, this includes healthy habits; and wake up earlier. Be gentle with yourself and other people for feelings of anger, rage, frustration, irritability or sadness. We are like bears coming out of our caves after a long winter: Some of us may have rested enough; others of us may not have!

Sign up now for the First Spring Sessions of weekly yoga, meditation and tai chi classes to learn more ways to soothe the angry or sad bear energy.

March 2016 Quotes
A Little Space Yoga & Tai Chi
A flower’s fragrance declares to all the world that it is fertile, available, and desirable, its sex organs oozing with nectar. Its smell reminds us in vestigial ways of fertility, vigor, life-force, all the optimism, expectancy, and passionate bloom of youth. We inhale its ardent aroma and, no matter what our ages, we feel young and nubile in a world aflame with desire.”
American Poet, Essayist and Naturalist Diane Ackerman (b. 1948)

March’s Workshop on the Low Back! A “Sea of Vitality”: How To Find Strength, Ease and Flow in the Low Back, Sunday, 3/6/16, 1-4 p.m. at A Little Space Yoga & Tai Chi

I hope you are all well and that we all have everything we need and are safe as we head into the predicted storm starting late tonight. I am looking forward to having a snow day and taking care of myself and my world tomorrow.

I am also looking forward to offering this weekend’s workshop on the knees for the second year in a row. I will be adding ideas about hands to this year’s workshop.

Thank you for your interest in these monthly workshops. I hope you are finding them helpful. After next month’s workshop on the Lower Back, I may be taking a little hiatus from the monthly workshops. I may, however, still offer the Seasonal Breathing & Meditation Workshop.

Here is the writing for “The Congregationalist” for next month’s workshop. Like the knees, there is still a relationship to the kidney organ system with the Lower Back. This might make a little more sense due to their proximity to each other. Hope you can join us!

Supporting the Oceans in Your Body

The body is basically rivers, streams or currents of energy, life force, vitality, qi or prana. According to the ideas of both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, we are more energy than anything that is stuck, stagnant or sick. At all times, all of us are knowingly or unknowingly practicing what yoga, tai chi, qigong and meditation are in essence — energy work. The question often is: Are we practicing energy work that is conducive to our health and well-being or discouraging to it?

These are not complicated ideas. We all know foods and activities that help us feel better, and we also know those that lead us to feel not so well. This is not a “should” or “should not” practice, but more a listening practice: Are we remaining present, kind and gentle and truthful to ourselves?

Qigong, “qi” means energy and “gong” means cultivation, of which Tai Chi is a type, is not just working with our bones and muscles but also with the organs and nerves and blood, etc., and even more with the cells of them and not just with the cells but the energy within the cells. So joint or back issues are not just those areas but also the state of the energy in those areas. In many ways, putting the body in a more holistic view of “being energy” can be freeing and healing than thinking of it as just a sum of parts. So yes, there are bones and muscles and organs and nerves and blood but even deeper in all of us is energy. Connect with yours today! You are more healthy than not.

Join us for February’s Workshop this weekend on Knees (and Hands) and/or March’s Workshop on the Lower Back to learn more about these ideas.

The Connection of Knee and Kidney Health: February’s Workshop on Knees AND Hands! The Way of the Knees: Release, Soothe and Support, Sunday, 2/7/16, 1-3 p.m. at A Little Space Yoga & Tai Chi

I may be resheduling the cancelled Restorative Yoga class from yesterday to this Sunday, January 24th, 1-3 p.m. Please let me know if you would be interested.

I am looking forward to offering a workshop on the knees for the second year in a row. As many of you have been bringing up that you have been having issues with your hands this winter, I will also be sharing some hand and finger ideas. We will be using the hands quite a bit with our knees this workshop, so it will work perfectly.

Here is the writing for “The Congregationalist” on this workshop. Hope you can join us!

Learn About Your Own Knees and Simple Ways To Care For Them

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), closely linked to the practice of tai chi and qigong, each season is connected to two organ systems, which means not only the organs themselves but also what is connected to them and their function. In winter, these organs are the kidney and bladder organ systems. So this means wintertime can be a great time to strengthen not just the health of the kidneys and bladder but also that conditions related to them may also appear. What is connected to these organs are the adrenal glands, reproductive organs, hair, teeth, joints, bones, bone marrow, blood, spinal cord, brain, ears, low back, and even memory. The knees and their health particularly are connected to the health of the kidneys according to TCM: Take care of your knees, you take care of your kidneys; take care of your kidneys, you take care of your knees.

Some simple ways to care for your knees and your kidneys are:

  • Drink plenty of water;

  • Keep your body warm, especially the middle back where the kidneys are located;

  • Gently massage this middle back area of the kidneys and the front, inside and outside edges and back of your knees daily;

  • Learn about the knee and its natural movements and your habits of movement; and

  • Strengthen and release (stretch) the muscles around the knee regularly.

Join us for February’s Workshop for more on this topic of the knees and these ideas. Also, a few exercises for hands and fingers may also be included. Whatever shape your knees are in, be sure and thank them! This goes for whether they are the knee joints you were born with or not. All parts of us, or that become part of us, benefit from our gratitude, and so do we.

First RESTORATIVE Yoga Class of 2016! — Ready, Set, Lie Down! — This Sunday, January 17th, 1-3 p.m. & Donation-Only Gentle Movement Class This Sunday, January 17th, 11:40 a.m.-12:25 p.m.

Happy, Happy New Year!

I hope this year may be wonderful for you and that, most of all, you realize how wonderful you already are and reward yourself regularly with rest. I love the idea of making better, quality sleep a health goal. Do you know how many hours of sleep you had last night? Were they quality hours of rest? Or did you wake up in the middle of the night and have a difficult time falling back to sleep? Or wake more tired than when you went to sleep? If so, do you have any techniques that may improve your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night and feel refreshed the next day?

This was just on yesterday. Wow! Over half of Americans have sleep problems?!

Consumers spent an estimated $41 dollars this past year on sleep aids and remedies. That number is expected to hit $52 billion by 2020.

Consumer Reports reviews sleeping aids and remedies

The good news is that yoga may help.

In particular, restorative yoga poses and practice teach us how to begin to relax our beings, sometimes just by noticing our tension, so that we may to usher in good, quality sleep. I encourage you to try your own study of 20 minutes every day of your favorite restorative pose and note whether or not and how your sleeping is affected.

To me the sign that yoga students are “advanced” is not how physically active they can be in their practice and what most demanding active pose they can achieve; it is how well can they rest, release and relax while in their active practice and remain attuned to their body and their needs and retreat into Restorative poses as they need even in an active yoga class or practice. I regularly encourage students to ignore me in class, so they may listen more. As they do, I often joke, but really do mean, they are now “advanced.”

Come practice lying down to begin your New Year refreshed and prepared for better sleep and well-rested mornings every day. Have courage to lie down and do nothing regularly. The world will not fall apart. You will feel better for it, and the world will benefit, too.

Welcome the New Year
With Meditation & Self-Care Ideas for the Winter Months
Yoga and Tai Chi are closely related to, some would say parts of, medical, or philosophical, models from their respective countries of India with Ayurveda and China with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Each of these models respect and include nature as one of the major driving forces of health and wellness. If you want to know what is happening outside, look within; if you want to know what is happening within you, look outside.
Accordingly with the seasons, our needs and our ways to meet them change. Many of us naturally do this without realizing we are practicing these principles. We eat differently in winter, generally more cooked foods, than in summer. We dress differently, more layers and less shorts and sandals. We may not be as physically active in winter as in summer. These models, however, give us much more information than how to eat, dress and move. They also give us little lessons in self-care and honoring our bodies and our health and insights into understanding why certain physical conditions or even emotions may be happening and how to cultivate our energy for them.
For example, in TCM, winter is connected to this idea of slowing down and doing less with the intention of building energy for the upcoming year and months. When we do not honor this, sometimes with the busyness of the holidays, we may find ourselves becoming run down and even sick. One way to build energy — throughout the year — is to rest for 20 minutes every day, no distractions, simply focusing on your body and your breathing. As long as there are no health conditions or reasons that would preclude you from having your legs above your heart, such as blood clots, glaucoma/eye pressure, active acid reflux or you are menstruating or pregnant, even better is to lie down on the floor with some support for your head and and to rest your lower legs, from the back of the knees to the heels, on a chair. Cover up your body with a blanket, place a washcloth or eyebag gently over your eyes, and breathe. Twenty minutes.
Another way is to be sure and stay warm over the winter months, including drinking warm liquids and maybe wearing a scarf and vest. In my years of practicing and teaching, I find more and more that I lean on these ideas and their corresponding meditation and breathing ideas to help support me. Each season and year has led to subtle but powerful shifts in my own health and well-being.
For the second year, each season, I would like to share these ideas with you through Seasonal Workshops. The first one for this year is this Sunday and is for winter.

Got Conflict? Learn & Practice Ways To Understand It and Communicate About It So That EVERYONE’S Needs Might Be Met: December’s Workshop on Nonviolent Communication and Better Sleep, Next Sunday, 12/6/15

I have been reading up — and practicing! — in preparation for next Sunday’s Workshop on Nonviolent Communication. I keep thinking that maybe I have it figured out, and then life and what I am reading is telling me that there is so much more still to learn about this communication model. It is and will be an ongoing endeavor as long as I am alive and wish to communicate and be happy.
It seems as though we cannot predict our conflicts. We can be having a great day, and then the very next day, or hour, something completely knocks us down and we may feel like we are back in our hole to dig out of or have now found a brand-new one. Learning Nonviolent Communication, while challenging, can be greatly helpful.
Nonviolent Communication is a process of communication created by Marshall Rosenberg. It is built on the basic premise that all of us humans have needs, and at all times, we are trying to get our needs met. Sometimes this goes peacefully; other times, it is complete and utter chaos and creates major conflicts or at least minor upsets for at least one but often more people.
So is there a way for us to tell someone how we are feeling and for all involved to have their needs met? Rosenberg would say, “Yes.” Instead of speaking from opinion, judgment and criticism through our heads, Nonviolent Communication takes us to our hearts so that we can speak from what is truly alive within us and what would make life more wonderful — and not just for us, but this is also intended for the other person!
I know it may sound a bit unbelievable, a bit too good to be true. But Rosenberg used this model throughout the world in successful and amazing mediations.
From his book Living Nonviolent Communication: Practical Tools To Connect and Communicate Skillfully in Every Situation, Rosenberg writes:

When I am called into a conflict resolution, I begin by guiding the participants to find a caring and respectful quality of connection among themselves. … . At that time, we do not look for compromise; rather, we seek to resolve the conflict to everyone’s complete satisfaction.  To practice this process of conflict resolution, we must completely abandon the goal of getting people to do what we want. Instead, we focus on creating the conditions whereby everyone’s need will be met. … .

Genuine cooperation is inspired when participants trust that their own needs and values will be respectfully addressed. The Nonviolent Communication process is based on respectful practices that foster genuine cooperation.
All are especially welcome to this workshop. We will learn about and practice the basic principles and model of Nonviolent Communication. Bring paper, pen and your conflicts! As a bonus, we will also learn a few ways to improve sleep. Hint: Conflict resolutions can help us.

Next Friday, December 4th, is the last day to sign up for the following workshop:
